[Prompt & Essay]

My favorite memory of Christmas is not a Hallmark edition, heartwarming story about enjoying family time or getting a new puppy. Instead, it evokes the time in December of 2017 that I bought a PlayStation VR and Resident Evil 7 VR edition for my father. Reputed to be one of the scariest games of all time due to its gruesome and graphic characters, terrifying setting, and horrifying plot, the VR environment only enhanced the experience by placing you uncomfortably close to all the grueling blood and gore. Unfortunately, for my father, he had never heard of the game.

Pressing upon my father to play the game immediately after our Christmas day celebration, he unsuspectedly put on the VR headset and then proceeded to emit bloodcurdling screams, terrified as he moved around the corner of each narrow corridor directly into darkness. Shaking with laughter as I watched him play, I lightheartedly remarked, “You are being a big baby." In response, my father told me to put on the headset and play.

Strutting over to the VR headset, I put it on and began playing. Almost immediately I too began screaming, even more than my father. Every little noise and object in the environment shattered my confidence and chilled me to the bone. I gave up playing within thirty minutes as my heart felt like it was going to explode. When I tore the headset off, I looked at the faces of my family, as they laughed uproariously at the irony of my experience. Worse yet, my father had recorded me playing the game, allowing him the privilege of retelling this story and showing the video of my embarrassing VR game session to others. It's an experience he heartily loves to relive again and again.
