[Prompt & Essay]

Every person has a creative side and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side. (350)

At the top of my closet lies a stack of twenty shoeboxes. However, none of the shoboxes actually hold shoes. Instead, they house my collection of projects I have made, as well as the tools and materials I used. In the back are the youth size boxes, with legos, model cars, and clay action figures from over a decade ago. As the shoebox sizes increase, so does the complexity of the contents within. Pipe-cleaners, and popsicle sticks turn into power tools and electrical circuits. These shoeboxes are the physical reflection of my love of engineering, and my passion for creating.

As my ideas became more complex, my shoeboxes were unable to support my creative needs. I started venturing out into more advanced fields, working with more sophisticated tools. My first opportunity to handle such equipment was when I attended an engineering program at Northwestern University the summer after my sophomore year. There, I worked with a team to build a remote control underwater vehicle. I got a taste of what working in a high level engineering lab was like - I instantly fell in love.

To explore the field even further, I enrolled in the Engineering class and joined the robotics team at school. Both of these groups gave me access to teachers and mentors who were able to help me dive deeper into the engineering world, and fine tune my skills, along with access to the engineering lab at school. With these resources, I was able to turn my ideas to reality, from building robots that could pick up objects to phone stands made from metal. With access to the 3D printer at school, I have been working on 3D designing a tool used to push buttons and open doors to prevent exposure from COVID.

My endless creativity is fueled by my curiosity. I am always eager to improve my skills and knowledge, which help me take my ideas to new heights. My creations are a direct reflection of my creativity, and I hope to learn skills that would help me express my ideas in more sophisticated ways.
