How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to UChicago.

An education at University of Chicago will allow my potential as a student, advocate and global citizen to flourish. 

I see myself reflected within the UChicago community as I recognize our shared devotions to civic engagement and values of free expression and diversity. The more I research organizations like Kababayan and Feminist Majority that align with my identity and passions, the more I see myself thrive within the UChicago family. Understanding that a campus bursting with contrasting views and backgrounds yields a richer academic experience, UChicago will encourage me to embrace different perspectives and engage in healthy debate among students from all walks of life.

Upon visiting UChicago, I was fascinated when hearing about the university’s devotion to providing every student with a strong intellectual foundation through the Core Curriculum. When I imagine my college experience, rather than seeing myself focused on the technical skills pertaining to one or two specific fields of study, I envision four formative years that train me to think and analyze with a critical mindset throughout whatever path I may choose, preparing me for the adversities of the real world; no other university provides a gateway towards this like U Chicago. The Core will not challenge me as an “X major,” but rather as a person by urging me to confront some of the most overlooked, fundamental questions that influence today’s society, a critical college experience not nearly as emphasized by other universities. 

Likewise, University of Chicago’s major in Gender & Sexuality Studies will help me manifest my passion for feminism and human rights into effective methods for social change. With its flexible curriculum after the completion of the preliminary Problems in Gender Studies, the major offers me freedom to specialize in studying the role of gender and sexuality within any category of society of my choosing, whether it be media, politics, literature, the professional world, or across cultures. With access to resources like the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture with unique opportunities to engage in the Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop and Feminist Lives and Queer Trajectories Series, studying Gender and Sexuality at UChicago will offer me an immersive experience in which I can channel my enthusiasm for feminism within academia.

With experience volunteering with the Robin Hood Foundation, New York’s largest poverty-fighting nonprofit, I hope to continue my social work in urban poverty in Chicago. Among students passionate to get involved outside the classroom, I’m eager to contribute my knowledge to help UChicago engage with underdeveloped areas of Chicago.

With its unmatched resources, opportunities, and supportive community, UChicago will aid me on my endeavor to create a more equal world.
