“Why not explain through the lens of Harry Potter?” excited, I asked my group members as we wrote a script explaining an economic concept tied to a historic event. It had been many days since we received the project, but we could not agree on an event from our list - the Great Depression, housing crash in 2008, or Harry Potter. We ultimately decided to take a risk and connect it to the imaginary world of Harry Potter, as the principle of opportunity cost played a role in the characters’ decision-making. Project your ideas, build consensus, take risk/responsibilities While whimsical, the project represents my love of working with others and learning how to incorporate creative ideas. The project was based on the 21st Century “Economic USA” videos, so my group had to create a video that incorporated relevant clips from Harry Potter, graphs and tables, and various role appearances. I learned how to create a video, using voice-overs and connecting each person’s part with the harry potter clips and graphs. The project, therefore, wasn’t simply a reiteration of economic concepts but a whole production that involved me learning economics and video production. The connection of opportunity cost to the Harry Potter world also required creative thinking, as we had to think from multiple perspectives. I thought of how Harry’s muggle education would be compromised by his magical one, especially in terms of his future integration into society.
I took a risk for the project topic, but I learned how to engage my team so we could write a script that incorporated a variety of ideas on what was originally a very dry topic.
