Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

Timid and on the wrong side of 130 pounds, I hesitated as my friends rushed towards the sign-up sheet to dance in the annual Bombay in the Bay show. Perhaps convinced that life is a one-time ride, I let my hand guide me as I reluctantly sentenced myself to potential embarrassment. Several weeks later, I nervously walked onto the stage, ready to perform in the midst of flashing lights and a cheering audience. Performing on that stage for the first time excited me, leading to my unexpected passion for Bollywood dancing.

I belong to the ICAC (Indian Cultural Awareness Club) community and have devoted my time and effort to spread the joys of dancing throughout my school. As a choreographer this year, I love interacting with younger students, motivating them to join our community and develop a rapport with other members.

From encouraging my friends to dance during annual school homecoming days to setting up fundraisers where parents dance to upbeat Indian music, I love the community I have built over the past 3 years. ICAC is the one of the places where I feel comfortable expressing myself, whether I am fundraising by setting up large scale Bollywood dance shows or dancing in front of freshman to get them motivated.

I hope to join a similar community on the Michigan Izzat Indian dance team, where I can continue sharing the experiences of Bollywood fusion dancing while fundraising for a cause.
