What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
As I stood nervously at my first high school speech and debate tournament, I realized that many of my opponents had been competing since middle school and were more experienced than me. While middle school speech and debate programs in other areas were thriving, my local middle school’s was on the verge of shutting down. I was determined to rebuild our program so future children would be able to get up on that stage with confidence and determination to succeed.
After contacting the school’s supervisor, I took it upon myself to conduct weekly meetings for the class and help the middle schoolers rehearse their speeches. I wanted to ensure confidence in our incoming freshman by helping them prepare. After class, I brought several members of my high school’s speech and debate team to the middle school to practice with the students. The kids were enthusiastic because they had never received abundant resources and help.
I helped one particular student, [name], break out of his shell and express something he had been holding in for a long time. Constantly made fun of for his weight, [name] gave a speech on bullying and consequently grew more self-confident. Another student, Alicia, was extremely passionate about photography so I helped her write a speech about the importance and significance behind pictures. The love she had for the art form was translated beautifully into a speech. She fell more in love with photography as she recited the speech, realizing the memories each photograph held was invaluable. All the kids in the program greatly improved their presentation skills as I stressed the importance of putting themselves into the character by showing passion during their speeches.
Watching their progress inspired me to return every week. I worked with them individually to make each student realize where their passion lay. Not only did I inspire the students to be their best, but I also set a foundation for future students to have the same experience through the saved program. Self-expression is important, and every person should be confident in their ability to shine.
