There is a Quaker saying: “Let your life speak.” Describe the environment in which you were raised—your family, home, neighborhood or community—and how it influenced the person you are today. (Required length is 200-250 words)

I was raised in an environment that encouraged learning. My parents shared their immense knowledge with me which enhanced my curiosity of the world around me. Biology is a common interest in my family; my personal interest developed as I listened to my father describe his research in genetics. I became fascinated with the function of genes and their role in genetic disorders. Today I plan to study biology to contribute to the fight against genetic disorders.

I am also exposed to a tremendous amount of Chinese culture and language. My parents often communicate to me in Chinese which has prompted me to study and understand the language. For over ten years, I attended Huaxia Chinese School to help me master the Chinese language. I started in kindergarten and attended classes every weekend to learn how to read, write and speak the language. Having an extended family where everyone is fluent in Chinese really motivated me to study hard.

I was very fortunate to have my parents available each night to help me as well. I learned to be patient and appreciate what my parents were able to teach me. After ten years of schooling I was able to pass the HSK test which demonstrated my proficiency in the language. I can now understand Chinese news and enjoy Chinese television with my family.

The environment my parents raised me in had a profoundly positive impact on me.
