How did you first learn about Rice University, and what motivated you to apply? (250 word limit)

When I first learned about Rice University through my friend and Rice alumni, one word stuck in my mind, setting Rice apart from the other universities. The word invented by the author Chinua Achebe, “Uwa-t’uwa”, means a world inside a world, and it perfectly captures the appeal of Rice. What I love about Rice is its unique feature of overlapping communities. Rice’s residential college system provides every student with an intimate support network and eases the transition for students like me from other states. Rice University itself, with its intellectual student body and its distinguished faculty, is an oasis in the middle of Houston, allowing its students to focus on their studies undistracted while still offering excellent internship opportunities. Beyond that, Rice is neighbored by a wonderful medical community. With six distinguished hospitals towering in the skyline, there are a plethora of medical opportunities right next to campus. Furthermore, the proximity of such advanced research and patient care is a constant source of inspiration for students like me, a great reminder of where all the studying will lead.  With the “passport to Houston,” Rice gives its students access to the community of diverse culture in one of the largest and fastest growing cities in America, giving them a chance to broaden their worldview. Overall, I am motivated to seek an education at Rice because it provides a multifaceted experience with countless opportunities and advantages on every level.
