Why are you interested in joining the Honors College, and how do you believe you would contribute to this interdisciplinary learning community?

I am eager to join the honors college to experience a curriculum more rigorous than ordinary. I am interested in the honors thesis. Writing a thesis will require me to put in more effort than I ever have and exert myself to the fullest. Writing is important to studying global affairs so an honors thesis will greatly  my studies. A paper as long and rigorous as a thesis will prepare me for the writing which I will do in my career. In addition when employers see that I have completed a thesis, I will have an edge over other job applicants.

I am also eager to take honors level classes. What strikes me the most is the graduate level selectives; being able to do graduate level work as an undergraduate is an opportunity I cannot turn away from. Overall, honors classes can provide me with a higher level of learning and force me to work harder to succeed.

I am willing to contribute to the honors community. I will do this by participating in honors leadership. I have prior leadership experience from marching band and Science Olympiad. I was invited  mentor for my middle school Science Olympiad team. I would like to use the skills I learned coaching students to help organize events for the honors community. While I was a mentor I learned how to work with the skills of fellow students to help them succeed. In addition as field equipment manager for the marching band I was responsible for giving an orientation of my high school to incoming freshmen. If given the chance I will similarly educate prospective students on the Honors College. Being field equipment manager also taught me how to handle complex logistics. This is a skill that I will use to help plan events for the Honors College.

I am also interested in the Honors College because of the community. Being grouped into my own “house” is an exciting idea and will hopefully give me a sense of family. Living in this community will give me a chance to interact with  like minded people which will help with the social transition from high school to college. I look forward to developing a sense of camaraderie.

The Honors College  many es but also requires a lot in return. I am willing to contribute my part to the college and work hard to succeed. I do not expect my journey to be easy but participating in the Honors College will rewarding nonetheless.
