How have you exhibited outstanding leadership?

As a leader for my high school marching band it was my responsibility to manage all of our equipment and teach new moves to the band. In addition to this I was tasked with mentoring new members of the band and helping the team resolve conflicts. Throughout my time as a leader demonstrated quick thinking, problem solving, and collaboration.

One lesson that taught me the value of leadership occurred when. This year I was able to help my friend Nick who was struggling Nick  had been assigned the first trumpet part and was unfamiliar with the role at first. When I saw that he was letting his fear overpower him, I let Nick look off of my part and reminded him of notes when we were marching. In addition, the first trumpet part had multiple high Cs and it was difficult for him to consistently play those notes. Therefore I suggested that we take turns playing the challenging notes in the show. This way we were able to pace ourselves throughout the show and deliver our  best performance.

Throughout the season, the band performed well but we face several challenges. One of the stadiums we competed in, Metlife Stadium, had different hash markings on the field than what we were used to. These same hash marks had negatively affected my performance during Freshman year; I was adamant that these hash marks would not confuse the rookie members of the band. During warm ups, I advised the rookies to look for taped lines and not to look at the stadium screen as it could potentially distract them. This way, I not only ensured our performance was smooth but also demonstrated to the rookies that we help each other to do our best as a team.

As a part of this team, my problem solving skills evolved as well. Another problem arose when two members of the band were being too intimidating. They yelled commands at one rookie and it soon got on everyone’s nerves. I talked to the rookie and it was clear that she already understood what she needed to do. Thus I politely told the other two band members to stop criticizing others. There is a difference between scolding someone for their mistake, and helping them realize what went wrong; as a leader I made this distinction for the benefit of everyone involved.

I am very fortunate to have had the chance to contribute to my band. I would not have been able to learn valuable leadership skills that will help me in the future.
