Why NYU?

NYU’s strong presence across 6 continents allows me to understand how to create self sustaining systems that can scale sustainable infrastructure development on a global scale.

By engaging in NYU’s study abroad program, I can learn more about environmental and energy issues in polluted areas in Southeast Asia and their effects on the daily lives of citizens. I plan to spend a semester studying at NYU Shanghai to analyze the respiratory and cardiovascular effects of ambient air pollution on local residents. Just as air pollution has become a source of global concern, the issue of water contamination appears to be equally important. I want to understand the influence of algal blooms, resulting from toxic waste disposal in lakes, on the commercial water supply and marine biodiversity. Through this insight, I can understand the impacts of various environmental health hazards on the quality of living for citizens in the area.

I want to understand how environmental policy can curtail the impact of environmental health  hazards, while simultaneously catalyzing economic growth. Stern’s courses provide me the opportunity to explore the significance of sustainable infrastructure development on the economy. The course: Energy & Environment: Business As Usual or Ripe For Revolution? taught by Oren Ahoobim provides an insight into the mechanics of energy and environmental economics. I am especially interested in the weekly briefing memos that can help me reflect on the effects of investing in renewable energy on the economic growth of countries. I enjoy the interdisciplinary focus of Stern’s courses that helps me understand the confluence between two distinct fields.

Besides offering a strong academic curriculum, Stern provides me the opportunities to use my passion for social entrepreneurship to create an organization that helps scale cleantech development across emerging economies. The Entrepreneurship in Residence program allows me to connect with social entrepreneurs like Hans Taparia to learn more about engaging in developing economies within South Asia. My goal is to understand infrastructure issues and create microfinance initiatives to scale clean technology development. Through Stern, I can create a successful social enterprise focused on engaging a global community in environmental issues.

Stern’s interdisciplinary focus allows me to explore the confluence between distinct fields such as social innovation and economics. With a Stern education, I can work with governments and NGOs in emerging nations on environmental policies to improve sustainable practices and the development of energy infrastructure.
