Please describe your ideal college campus/academic environment and what you hope to gain from it.

Ideal college campus:

  1. Living with students from across the nation and the world as opposed to living in a bubble in Bay Area

    1. More diverse

    2. People from several different backgrounds and different lives as opposed to here where everyone has the same story

    3. Can learn other perspectives

In eleventh grade, my history teacher assigned a presentation on our families’ immigration to America. I already knew my story: my father came from India to obtain his PhD and find a job before marrying my mother. But on the day of presentations, I found that my classmates’ stories were nearly identical. Though the countries of origin were different, our reasons, and lives, were frighteningly similar. Even in the supposedly diverse Silicon Valley, we were not different from one another.

In college, I hope to separate from this lifestyle and become more aware of diverse backgrounds. Rather than just hearing similar opinions, I want to learn from others’ experiences and gain new perspectives. This way, I can be conscious of not just my values, but of others’ values as well. With students such from a wide range of backgrounds, Emory is the perfect place to broaden my horizons.
