“Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut

  • Being better than average (Hazel) should be the ideal

  • Individuality should not be destroyed because it also destroys beauty

  • Emory is a school that holds these beliefs as well

My favorite fictional short story is “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. “Harrison Bergeron” describes a futuristic society in which above-average citizens are given handicaps to keep everyone “equal.” The characters in the story are drained of individuality and greatness, thereby conforming completely to society. Through this story, Vonnegut demonstrates that conformity is not the way to live, and I agree.

By demonstrating the importance of individuality and independence, this story made me realize that a world of conformity is a world without individuality, creativity, and talent--no progress can be made. Existence itself is meaningless due to lack of self-expression. The destruction of creativity fosters a lack of passion and motivation, therefore halting progress. Thus, talent is necessary to move forward and allow humanity to continue bettering itself. Emory--a university that encourages and embraces individuality while inspiring greatness--is where I can better myself to contribute to a progressive society.
