The business program at Kelley School of Business is competitive and while your student's ACT score of 34 is well above the required score, her GPA of 3.49 falls short. The website states that students may successfully petition if one of the required scores is slightly lower, however your student's score is quite a bit lower. You may be interested to know that a recent article stated that not only are test scores and GPA important for selection, but also volunteer work, international travel and diversity of ideas.  I have included the information for the school’s website below as well as the excerpt from the article on the direct admit program from 2015.

Please note that I was not able to find information on the rate of admission into the direct admit program.

Kelley School of Business website - https://kelley.iu.edu/Ugrad/Admissions/Future/page39066.html

If you are admitted to IU, you will become a direct admit to the Bloomington Kelley School of Business for fall 2017 if you met all criteria below and have a completed IU application (with all application materials submitted) by November 1:

  1. Indicated one of Kelley’s business majors as your intended major.

  2. Earned the required test score. Information on how IU superscores is available here.

    1. A composite ACT score of 30

    2. OR

    3. An old SAT score of 1300 (Critical Reading and Math) OR a new SAT score of 1360 (Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math)

  3. Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale in high school. We will use the highest GPA that is sent to IU Admissions from your official high school transcript. In most cases this is the weighted GPA.

Petition for Kelley Direct Admission

Petitions are not guaranteed admission, but are an opportunity for a student’s record to be individually reviewed. Any student who applies to IU after November 1 who wishes to be considered for direct admission should petition.

To be eligible to petition for Fall 2017 direct admission, you must:

  • Be an incoming freshman matriculating in the fall semester.

  • Choose one of Kelley’s business majors on the IU Bloomington admission application.

  • Meet one category for direct admission (GPA or test scores)*.

  • Be slightly lower on the remaining component for direct admission (GPA or test scores)*.

  • Have an official IU computing account. You will be able to establish this after you complete your application to IU.

  • Complete the online petition form, including a brief personal statement.

*For example, a student who has a 32 ACT and a 3.79 GPA would be eligible to petition.

Petitions Timeline

Applying to IU is the first step, listing a Kelley business major. Once you have applied to IU and have created your IU computing account, you may complete a petition. Petitions will open on September 1.

Please note, your IU computing account is not your IU guest account. It can take up to 3 weeks for IU computing accounts to be created after submitting your IU admission application.

Your petition will not be acted upon until you are admitted to IU. We encourage you to petition as soon as possible.

Petition outcomes will be sent to both the IU email account and personal email.

Petitions submitted by December 1, 2016

Preference given to direct admit petitions completed by this date.

Will receive a response no later than February 3, 2017

Petitions submitted after December 1, 2016 through April 1, 2017

All applications submitted after December 1 will be considered on a space-available, case-by-case basis.

Petitions close April 1, 2017.

Due to the highly competitive nature of Kelley freshmen scholarships, preference is given to direct admits who automatically met the criteria.

Here is an interesting article about Kelly Direct Admit.

Record Numbers For Kelley Direct Admit Day

GIVING BACK AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL KEY FOR ENTRY

What exactly is Kelley looking for in a direct admit student? First, students wanting to apply to the direct admit program at Kelley must have an ACT score of 30 or an SAT score of 1270. Next, Kesner says, Kelley wants to see extra-curricular activities. “We not only want to see their ability to engage in leadership through sports or another extra-curricular activity, we want to see them also give back,” Kesner says. “We look for volunteer work and international travel. We want the students coming here to be a great addition to our culture. There is international travel during the sophomore year of our program and it is great to see that prior experience.”

Kelley is also looking for diversity in their program. Says Kesner, “It’s not just about gender and ethnicity, it’s about diversity of thought and creating an enriching environment with that diversity of thought.”
