Computer Camp for 9th to 12 graders at Stanford

Web design and software programming are perhaps the most sought-after skills in this hi-tech era. For tech-savvy students who want a leg up in the competition by building critical computer skills early in life, or for students who just love gaming, design and logic, Education Unlimited’s Computer Camp offers hands-on instruction in both creative and practical computer skills. Experienced instructors encourage students to use their imaginations while exploring fundamental and emerging technologies and software.

Middle School Programming with Processing (University of Utah)

This camp uses the Processing programming language to learn more about programming while making interactive illustrations, animations, and simple games. The Processing language is based on the popular Java language and is designed to appeal to visual artists, so this is a good way to get started in "real" programming. This camp runs from 9AM-3PM, M-F. Lunch is provided. This camp is open to students entering 7th-10th grade. Campers must have taken the Middle School Graphics and Robotics camp or the Super Scratch camp prior to this camp or had some equivalent experience. Please check the Dates tab as this camp does not run all weeks. $230

Emagination Computer Camps

Emagination’s core Computer Camp program blends technology learning with fun summer camp activities to create a well-rounded summer camp experience. Sessions are two weeks long so campers have time to become part of a community while learning new tech skills.

Digital Media Academy

Digital Media Academy operates out of 10 of the top colleges and universities in the U.S. (Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Brown) and UBC in Canada, offering day and overnight programs for children ages 6 to 18. According to DMA, kids are taught by "award-winning filmmakers and artists, master teachers and certified Apple, Adobe and AutoDesk professionals." All of the camps are "project based meaning your son or daughter completes a real-world project under the guidance of one of our professionals." What's more, there are two sets of staff, one for technical instruction and another set for more traditional camp activities and the overnight program.

DMA, like other camps, offers an almost overwhelming number of programs broken up to match age and skill level. Kids ages 6 to 8 can take part in Jr. Adventures learning drama and digital filmmaking, exploring high-tech and enviro-conscious technologies, as well as photo editing and 3D game design. Kids ages 9 to 11 can choose from workshops like special effect filmmaking, 2D and 3D game design and cartoon/comic creation. There are also pre-teen and teen courses with more beginner and advanced classes, as well as some really cool sport/tech combination programs like skateboarding and filmmaking.

National Computer Camps

Founded in 1977, National Computer Camp has four locations: New York, Atlanta, Connecticut and Ohio. While it looks like their website hasn't been updated in about 10 years, NCC claims to offer the same courses as its flashier competitors (2D and 3D game design, web design, Android app programming, video production, software apps), as well as offering A+ hardware, software and network+ certification, plus PSAT and SAT Math preparation classes, with a lower price tag to boot.

Like all tech camps, it seems there is time for active recreation as well as a sports and tech program with tennis, soccer and baseball during part of the day.

Developer Camp: The World's Best Hackathon

Friday, November 18, 2016 at 5:00 PM - Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 6:00 PM (PST)
San Francisco, CA

Our sponsor PullString makes creating computer conversation super fun and easy! Using any Mac, a writer can script and publish a chat bot using their service, starting for free.
If you'd rather learn on any recent-model iPad, Apple's free Swift Playgrounds app will teach you to code joyfully.
This event has catalyzed the launch of award winning startups (like Getaround and Foodspotting), the formation of founder dream teams (Square), and the building of a talented and collaborative community of developers.
Out-of-town guests are welcome to join our inclusive event. Though projects will include both solo and team efforts, we encourage attendees to build teams of diverse expertise — business ideas, marketing, design, testing, coding, and back-end development. All attendees should be prepared to participate in the development of a project during the event. Scholarships are available to encourage diversity, and mentors are available.
“It’s one of the most pure and original hackathons.  People come from all around and really just hack on something, meet new people, cherish the relationships that they create here—and go out to create huge companies. The developers we’ve met at Developer Camp are among the best in the world. Some of them have gone on to join our team. We’re excited to be supporting the event again this year... Developer Camp is the best.”
